What inspired you to pursue a career in architectural design?

I wouldn’t call it an architectural design. The term “architectural” is overused these days, which I would like to avoid by substituting “Environmental or Built Environmental or Concept and Idea driven Spaces”.

I personally hate the term “Design”.

Perhaps I have prejudice over it with ego and arrogance. I wouldn’t say I’m a talented designer, but to describe myself as a Unique Thinker and most importantly “Creative”.

What do you think is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

“Self-Rewarding” Moment or the Feeling of Self-Rewarded Satisfaction should be how I would answer your question about an “aspect of your job”. It’s because this is part of my life.

I need to give love and let it see grow with love. Only then I would feel rewarded.

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

“Just because they have big goals and ambitions doesn’t mean they are dreamers. They value principle and perfection and are not satisfied until they do what they believe is right.”

E.A.T. Test (Entrepreneurial Aptitude Test), Heart-Smart-Guts-Luck Result as Heart Dominant of ‘33%’

Heart, Inner passion, and purpose is the strongest and most important trait among the business founders we surveyed. To a large extent, it’s something you’re born with.

But following your Heart is an explicit decision.

To ponder more deeply what you naturally feel is your greatest passion is your greatest opportunity for, well, greatness.

Entrepreneurs start from that place we call Heart, an inner passion, and desire that is not easily malleable.

We are what we feel.

But turning that passion into a business reality obviously requires executing it. The heart is about purpose and passion – one’s calling.

You don’t start a company just because you want a job; you start a company because you have a deep passion for something.

60 % of Founders were dominant with the Heart trait.

Why are you leaving your job?

When I start to feel, Unhappy.
No Love. Only a Repetition.
Lack of Joy and Searching for a Meaning.

How you describe your work style as an architect?

I would like to avoid using the term “style”. By replacing it with a Unique and Sensible “Taste” in Design and Architecture.

Where would you like to be career-wise five years from now?

Keep doing what I love, as a parent, to my children of my family as a job, team, and practice. The same goes for both. I must give love and feel the love, the centre of our world, the foundation of all morality, all ethics, all joy. Make Love Work!

It’ll be when I have learned the skill of finding love in what I do.

Where would you like to be career-wise five years from now?

“Sadly, not every professional is interested in making sure that they are right up-to-date with the latest research and thinking in their core area. However, Tommy is one of those rare people who take their professional responsibilities and development seriously, and who mixes practical experience with proper evidence and research. Tommy is professional, knowledgeable, and with a real concern for not only making sure that his work is evidence-based but that his deep knowledge is right up-to-date with the very latest research and evidence.”

Anxiety has a place for anxiety
There is no life without anxiety
We are imperfect, with anxiety
Because we live together
As a human being, you can be perfect.

To become mature

And the emotions that arise within me
In the sharp confrontation of reason
There is no negotiation that
Satisfies everyone
A few steps to feelings
It is normal to give in

I threw a rope into the river

That was enough
Country to man
To survive this world
All that is given is the rope

Even shortsighted
Towards the immediate target
I want to live a slow life

Life is for everyone in their own way
I want to be able to endure
On the path you choose
To endure silently
Is the best we can do

What kind of music do you listen to at the moment?

It depends on whether I’m in the production mode or inspiration mood or reflection mode.

From Glenn Gould’s Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (The 1955 & 1981 Recordings) in the morning.

From Max Richter’s The New Four Seasons ‘Vivaldi Recomposed’

From 150 Repeat of a Single Track for an entire day by Kanye West, M83, and James Blake.

To my most Tear Dropping of old and airy piano sounds by Nils Frahms, album ‘Screws’.

To the beats of Bicep - Before the establishment of their intricate, genre-splicing electronic compositions, the Northern Ireland duo of Emotional Electric Sounds with beats of melody.

No. I find it highly distracting to my thinking as I have no space or tolerance in my brain to listen and predict their sayings, communication, and upcoming play of tracks.

Do you listen to the radio?

What books do you have on your bedside table?

I have my own e-book library and shelf on my iPad Mini (his name is Mini Biscuit) divided by the following order.

  1. Respected Authors of Philosophy.

  2. The Top 3 Philosophers, for me, are Walter Benjamin, Henri Bergson, and lastly and most importantly Friedrich Nietzsche and his last writing Ecce Homo.

  3. Humanity, mostly German Authors.

  4. Life Advice by Mostly Japanese Authors.

  5. The Entire Collection of Books by Ven. Pomnyun (法輪), Seon master, author, and activist who spread the message of happiness and freedom. He firmly believes everyone can, and have the right to, be happy and free. This is made possible by becoming free of suffering and free from worldly attachment.

  6. Psychology Readings by only specific authors, mostly European, German females.

  7. All books by Peter Handke.

  8. Conversation and Poetry by Jorge Luis Borges.

  9. Old Poems and Books, mostly by Japanese or Korean Buddhists.

  10. Han-Byung Chul, the Korean / German Author of ‘The Scene of Time’ and ‘Praise of The Earth, A Trip to the Garden’.

  11. Rest of Up-To-Date Research Materials by The Oxford Review.

  12. Most Essential Books by Harvard Business Review.

  13. My Self-Picked Collection of Articles from The New York Times and The New Yorker.

  14. The Rest of My Always Favourite Repeated Reading Books.

What is your least favourite thing about architecture?

Ugly can be beautiful, it is only a matter of a fine line of “Taste”. But overly complicated and barely practical-driven, senseless spaces are my least favourite places. There is no culture. No harmony. No feelings, but only chaos.

What qualities make you a great architect?

Inner-Passion, Enthusiasm and lastly, “Authenticity”.

What skill has served you best as an architect?

From the first employment of my career, I have been advised and respected that I’m a “Well-Rounded” Architect of my age (at that time).

It has been repeatedly said by every employer in my career who are the founders, chairman, and my fathers who have seen me closest and profoundly deepest of my nature as a human being, in making my Love Work for the past 15 years of career.

Describe a time a problem arose and how you dealt with it.

Research. Read. Re-read everything.
Think before you act, impressively.
Re-Think your use of vocabulary.
Revisit your writing.
Do not suppress your emotion.
Be expressive of your emotion.
But don’t let it overtake the entire situation.

Be clear and Accept evidence-based problems.
Find the truth, then there has always been a solution to any problem..

Describe your worst day as an architect and what you learned from it.

I did it without asking my mind. No involvement of my heart in any of the production,
but for hours of money.

As it comes again, as previously mentioned, Self-Satisfaction is the most fulfilling reward of my Love Work.

What factors led to your biggest success as an architect?

Unfortunately, I do not know the answer to that. Or even shall I bother pondering about “factors”? I don’t genuinely believe it is only a factor-driven outcome to be a “biggest success as an architect”.

It means Nothing but Everything

How do you handle multiple tasks at the same time?

I realised at some point in my career that I was handling over 8 projects simultaneously with the closest team members of my team. And with my sensitivity and flashing records of moments in my memory.

My Right Brain somehow automatically calculates and plans with finely detailed plans to even minute divisions.

While my Left Brain is painfully searching for an inspiration.

Describe a time you dealt with a difficult person and how you handled the situation.

Whom, he/she had absolutely no ethics, courtesy and respect, no empathy, no authenticity, but only with a mere mind of authority.

Not a mind. No hearted person.

My solution was to spend as less time as possible resolving any disputes with clarity and truth.

Then quickly escape by cutting the Knot.

What is the best moment of the day?

My so-called ‘The Golden Hour of Inspiration’ at 3:15 AM.

My ‘Focused and Productive Hour’ is counted to Minutes’ at 6:15 AM.

My most ‘Successful Communication Time’ is at 9:15 AM.

Do you read design and architecture magazines?

No, I don’t read architecture magazines; I just browse through them. and as many as possible. I’m a good client for fully subscripted publications.

Only from my selected sources and published articles, which are The New York Times, and The Financial Times. I disregard all other news.

As I respect Paul Virilio and Jean Baudrillard, as they say, Media and Information itself is the Terror.

Where do you get news from?

I assume you notice how people dress. Do you have any preferences?

Very Good Question.

I hate to say this, but I do judge how people dress not by being fashionable and up to date but by whether the person is rather sensibly wearing, fits, textures, materials, appropriateness, the smell, and lastly with a ‘Taste’.

It’s been the quickest identifier for social interaction to my knowledge.

What kind of clothes do you avoid wearing?

Cheap Material. I hate Patterns.
Overly eye-catching or perhaps distracting visual standards are set.

I go by the brand, of their philosophy and use of materials, value for money,
Without ‘Trend-Following’.

Taste and Signature Look over ever-changing fashion and trend maps.

Classics, Essentials, and Care and Durability of Materials.

They are clothes I wear over 10 years, yet they look like I bought them the last month.

What kind of clothes do you avoid wearing?

Speaking of Brands,

My preferences are,

Uniqlo, Uniqlo U, APC, Acne Studio, MISMO, J CREW, Muji & ……

Do you have any pets?

As much as I would like to, because I live alone, to have a living, to speak to and interact with. To give love.

Unfortunately, with family tradition, my parents and older brother have been in extreme grief after the loss.

As much as I want to love and care, I’m afraid I can not. And that is not fair for my pet of mine.

When you were a child, did you want to become an architect?

I think my father already raised me to be an architect, as it was his own dream. I found myself drawing plans of rooms at the age of 6, while others are drawings of animals and sorts.

At the moment I had to pick, finally, for the enrolment of university I was formed between, Medical School, Doctors, Pharmacy and Architecture.

It, naturally, eventually turned out to be Architecture and for the sake of my father’s young dream, I achieved high distinctions in all design studios, and lastly graduated as the top design student scoring 98 / 100.

My father is still apologetic for not attending my graduation, but it did not matter to me.

I felt like I achieved the dream of my own and his.

Do you discuss your work with other architects and designers?

No. Discussing architecture with architects is the most boring and predictable thing. I would try my best to avoid it unless I really have to.

A fool, I close my eyes and mutter that
The world is a curse.

The first thing I do now is
To open my eyes.

If you have enough time for deep reflection
Helps open bright eyes.

If the world dominates even after you wake up
The light must be lit.

Already disappeared

The future hasn't come yet.

Realised at this moment
Seeking life.

Practice early now,

Again from now on
It is the start of a new life.

Life is indeed
Valuable facts,

When a life worth living is wasted
That life ends up not being on the blackboard.

To live a life worth living
First of all, a vain life
It is said to have turned into a tortoise.

When correctly recognised
End a life that has stopped
It makes life worth living difficult.

And this life is really
Find a happy life

Even if I die today,
I will not regret it

Every day
A life full of joy

Describe your style, like a good friend of yours would describe it.

"I live on what others don't know about me."

by Peter Handke.

Please describe an evolution in your work, from your first project to the present day.

Only for the people who respect and understand the importance and purpose, value of exceptional design.

Do you have any favourite architects from the past?

It’s always been Rem Koolhaas from my early education.

Unfortunately, I don’t follow or read any architects anymore.

Steve Jobs

LOVE + WORK

YOUR PARENTS' JOB WAS TO KEEP YOU ALIVE.
THEY MEANT WELL.

STEVE JOBS SAID IN HIS FAMOUS STAMFORD COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS, “THE ONLY WAY TO DO GREAT WORK IS TO LOVE WHAT YOU DO.”

MORE THAN LIKELY, YOUR LIFE DIDN’T START OFF THIS WAY.

YOU WERE MADE WITH LOVE,

AND THROUGH MANY OF US EXPERIENCED CHILDHOOD TRAUMA,

YOUR PARENTS SURELY INTENDED FOR YOUR FIRST YEARS TO BE LOVE-FILLED.

THEY GAZED AS YOU, A TODDLER,

DELIGHTING IN YOUR CURS, YOUR GIGGLES,
YOUR TEETERING AND TWIRLING AND DASHING AND TUMBLING,
AD THEY DREAMED OF YOUR FUTURE.

THEY LOOKED FOR ALL THAT WAS RIGHT AND BEST ABOUT YOU.

THEY SAW IN THEIR MIND’S EYE THE BIGGEST, MOST BEAUTIFUL IMAGE OF YOU,
AND THEY CHERISHED IT, HOLDING IT SO CLOSE TO THEIR HEARTS THAT
THEY ACHED WITH LOVE FOR YOU AND AKL THAT YOU COULD BECOME.

YOU WERE THE CENTER OF THEIR WORLD,

THE FOUNDATION OF

ALL MORALITY, ALL ETHICS, ALL JOY.

What advice would you give to the young?

As I have always said to my years of master studios and thesis graduate students,

“As a studio leader of the Master of Architecture, I would like to congratulate all the thesis graduates for their impressive outcome. The dedication, endless efforts, and trust they had for the lead of my supervision, hereby I want to say - be proud of your achievement!”

“Architecture is an act of realisation that is to create something real, from a vague imagination into physicality. It is only a bridge, and we are now one step closer to our continent - Society.”

“Continue to pursue with optimism without losing your -
Original Creative Mind.”

“My role in the studios was to provide a line of critical resistance for your ideas. I challenged your intentions in order to refine them so that you will gain the confidence required to present in front of the audience clearly.”

“I want to thank sincerely all our sponsors to make the exhibitions held in places where students feel proud to be showcasing their academic work and achievement.”

“Needless to say, I want to thank you, all the students, for their dedication and effort throughout the years.”

Do you teach?

I have taught 3 Postgraduate Design Studios of my own brief for students to have Complete Freedom to Intellectually Engage in Academic Research, I’ve been an Individual Thesis Supervisor, Lecturer, and 28 Classes from History to Theory over 8 years starting from the moment of my graduation.

However, I don’t teach anymore. And I do not wish to.

I’m scared that I’ll no longer find ‘those’ talented students with great and genuine passion and dedication anymore.

What are you afraid of regarding the future?

If I have to be worried about the future, it will be of only myself and my loved ones.

Thank you.

LOVE + WORK

SOME WILL TELL YOU NOT TO BRING YOUR PERSONAL FEELINGS-YOUR LOVES-TO WORK.

WORK DOES NOT DO IT:

WORK IS MOST CONCERNED WITH PERFORMANCE, ABOUT WHAT NEEDS TO GET DONE,

WHAT YOU LOVE, WHO YOU LOVE, HOW YOU LOVE,

WHY YOU LOVE, WHAT YOU LOVE, AND HOW THOSE YOU LOVE FEEL ABOUT YOUR LOVE -

ALL OF YOUR LOVE LIFE IS THE SUBJECT.

YOU CAN LEARN TO DO WHAT ALL THESE THRIVING PEOPLE DO. YOU CAN LEARN HOW THEE DID IT,

AND APPLY THIS TO ALL PARTS OF YOUR OWN LIFE.

YOU DON’T NECESSARILY NEED TO HOLD OUT FOR THAT PERFECT JOB WHERE YOU DO ALL THAT YOU LOVE.

INSTEAD,
YOU CAN LEARN THE SKILLS OF FINDING

THE LOVE IN WHAT YOU DO.=
